Shine Grooves @shine-grooves is a veteran of Russian electronic music and one of the most distinctive figures in the Urals underground, as well as the quiet mastermind behind the Hanagasumi label. Real name Andrey Kurokhtin, and with a string of group projects and aliases (Quadrat, Rokton Ensemble, X343 etc.), the producer has contributed to various international labels such as 100% Silk, Kimochi and Not Not Fun, alongside an extensive commitment to the local scene since the early 2010s. An engineer as well as a musician, Kurokhtin is also the creator of the legendary Magnitron cassette mixer, developed in collaboration with GOST ZVUK. He continues his association with the crew with new full-length Pyshma (Пышма), revealing a particularly delicate side of his sound world. Pensive, musical and deeply atmospheric, A2 track ‘Live Keys 2000’ sets the tone for Pyshma. Kurokhtin’s sound world is indebted to playful library music, glitch, experimental drone and vintage house and techno, though we only catch glimpses of the latter scattered across Pyshma, its focus instead on dense layers of ambience and elements of dub. ‘Spok’ (A5) is a rare moment of intensity, with half-time, footwork tempo rhythms ricocheting off each other in a kind of organised chaos. Reverb-laden, bleary-eyed early morning washes of noise and melody carry us into the second half of the album, with ‘Ossenyaya’ recalling some of the material on Kurokhtin’s new-age leaning tape Sequences for Fluttering and ‘Vid Iz Okna’ bringing in a broken, dusty rhythm that could drive a lo-fi house track if pitched all the way up, coalescing around a sun-kissed balearic guitar motif. Closing number ‘Two Level Sleep’ utilises a similarly laid-back, dreamy sound palette, warm with saturated tape hiss and looping ever so gracefully.
